Mental Health Policy on the agenda at Nay Pyi Taw meeting

Earlier this month in Nay Pyi Taw, national and international health professionals, academics, psychiatrists and civil society organisations, and Myanmar Government officials and politicians joined together to discuss growing burden of mental health problems and the need for a mental health policy in the country.

While mental health problems in Myanmar are growing year-on-year, the most up-to-date law on the issue – the 1912 Lunacy Act – is over 100 years old. HelpAge International’s advocacy work has been key to getting discussions on these policy revisions going, and we eagerly await the finalisation and approval of the policy.
